Travel Tips

Currency

The currency of Cambodia is “Riel”. The most common denominations are 100, 500, 1000, 5000 and 10000 notes—no coin is used. The exchange rate ranges between 4,000 and 4,100 Riels to one U.S. dollar. Although Reil is widely used by locals, the best currency for travelers is the US dollar.

Reil is generally useful only small purchases. Tourists’ cheques are difficult to exchange outside Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Sihanouk ville, Battambang and Kompong Cham. Although cash advances on credit cards are available in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Sihanoukville and Battambang, associated fees are high. So visitors should carry with them only the US dollars.
