Preah Khan Temple

Preah Khan Temple: Located northeast of Angkor Thom (Great City), this twelfth-century temple was built in the reign of King Jayavarman VII. The temple is similar to Ta Prohm and Banteay Kdei temple style, but more attractive.

The location of the temple used to be a most important bloody battle field between Jayavarman VII’s troops and Cham troops in A.D.1181. The king’s troops succeeded over Cham troops in that battle. To remind the event, the king ordered his officials to build the temple. When the construction had been successfully completed, he gave a name to the temple as “Nagara Jayasri”, in Sanskrit; that is, means “Holy city of victory”.

According to inscription on its stellar, the temple was built to dedicate the king’s father, Buddhisvara and gods in Hinduism. Also, it was an important center of Angkor; there were almost 100 000 officials and servants living, working, and learning there. It was a great university and religious center.
