Banteay Srei

Banteay Srei was erected in second half of the 10th century during the reign of King Rajendravarman and Jayavarman V. Not built by the Kings, the temple was built by a Brahmin of royal descent who was spiritual teacher to Jayavarman V.

It was dedicated to Shiva in Hinduism. The temple is located in Banteay Srei village about 32 kilometers north of Siem Reap province town. Because of its beautiful rose-colored sandstone wall with marvelous carvings and bas-reliefs, Banteay Srei temple is regarded as the jewel in the crown of classical Khmer art. It is considered as the most beautiful temple that was inherited from Angkor era.

According to inscription, the temple was originally called “Isvarapura”, that is, means “ The city of Isva (Shiva)”. However, nowadays it is known as Banteay Srei temple; it is probably because of the beauty of its style and decoration.
